You're reading what?!

Should be Reading hosts WWW Wednesdays and it's a nice way to tell everyone what I'm up to and to hear what is filling your days, literary-wise.

What are you currently reading?
I was reading Libba Bray's The Diviners. It is a young adult book. I don't read many young adult books, but when I come across a good one, I'm very happy for it. Except, this was not a good one for me. Filled with annoying expressions, that I assume Bray was using to attempt to recreate the vernacular of the 1920s, and a pain-in-the-ass protagonist had me putting this book aside 150 pages in. Now, onto Karen Thompson Walker's much lauded The Age of Miracles.

What did you recently finish reading?
Over the holiday weekend I read Richard Ford's Canada. Ford is a Pulitzer Prize winner and his latest books has received rave reviews and serious pans. I was convinced I wouldn't like it. I thought I'd read two pages and be done. But that didn't happen. The story takes place in the 1940s in Montana, and later, the similarly landscaped, Saskatchewan. Our protagonist is teenaged and relatively naive, chess-playing, bee-obsessed Dell. When he and his twin, Berner's parents rob a bank, their life changes dramatically - as you would expect. The twins separate and Dell is spirited away to a friend of a friend up in Canada. There is also a murder in these pages. I'm not giving anything away. It's right there on page one. I wouldn't say I loved this book, but I did like Ford's writing style. It kept me interested. There are a few beefs I'd mention if I were a critic, but mostly, I liked it.

What do you think you’ll read next?
I have a pile of library books that have to get read ASAP. Next up is All the Pretty Horses and The Yips. They're all due next week!

I enjoyed "All The Pretty Horses" and if I remember correctly, it's a bit dark.
