Quote the Ravens: We Won the Super Bowl

So, the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl. I slept through much of it, frankly. But I did manage to see some stellar dance moves and some confetti angels, courtesy of the winning team. Did you know that the Ravens were actually named after Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven? Yeah, neither did I. Don’t you love when literature and football collide?

Poe was a resident of Baltimore. This I didn't know, because there is a shiny brass plaque on E. 84th Street in New York saying the same thing. The Ravens initially had three mascots, "Edgar," "Allen," and "Poe." After 2008, the Poe was the only one left, soon to be joined by "Rise" and "Conquer," both ravens.

This fact was far more interesting to me than the actual football happenings last Sunday. I know, I'm barely American. However, I did quite enjoy this moment:

There are those movies that I've watched that are about football, but I still enjoy. Like, the Disney favorite, Remember the Titans and the absurdly inspiring The Blind Side. (Oh, hello Michael Oher - you Baltimore Raven you!) Stories that I get into despite the football. I'm sorry to you football fans out there! This is surely blasphemy!

But what about books? Are there books out there about football that I could, and more importantly, should, still get into? Let me know!

I've actually been to Baltimore, and it's where Poe died, too. He was back and forth between New York and Baltimore and was actually thought to be in New York at the time of his death. His grave is in a beautiful old cemetery there in Baltimore, and when I went, it was piled with pennies. I was curious and found out that when Poe died, he was essentially destitute. The children of Baltimore (supposedly) collected money to buy a headstone.

After all that, no, I did not watch the Super Bowl. :)
